Windows 10 Microphone Issues

Problem Description

I don't want to hear my microphone through my headset.

Hearing yourself through your headset can feel a little strange. But when there's a delay between what you say and when you hear it is extremely annoying. Fortunately we can fix this.

Right Click on Volume in taskbar.
Click Open Sound Settings

Under Sound in the right hand window, Scroll down to Input
Click on Device Properties

Click on Additional Device Properties

Click on Listen tab
Uncheck the Listen To This Device checkbox
Click Apply and OK

You shouldn't hear the microphone though your headset any more.
Click the test button to see that the microphone is still working.

Even though you don't hear the microphone through the headset you should still see movement on the volume bar directly above the test button.

You can now close the Device Properties Window.

My microphone works in some programs but not in others.

If your microphone works in some programs, but not others like Ring Central or Microsoft Teams, you need to change the privacy settings.
Right click on your start button and click on settings.
Type Microphone in the search box and then click on Microphone privacy settings.

Make sure that Allow apps to access your microphone is turned on.
